Liedeke Sweitzer has received the Undergraduate Research
Prize in Mathematics, for the 2014-2015 academic year
for her
research on "The Peculiar Paths of Plankton’’". Liedeke
modeled the path of plankton as a helix and
determined the pitch and the radius of the helix as
well as the orientation and the translation parameters
of the helical axis from the positional data of the
plankton. The problem reduced to a difficult minimization
problem with many local minima. The data was obtained
using a high resolution microscope at DBI. The
research was supervised by Professor Louis Rossi.
