Image Picker for Section 0

The Graduate Student Seminar series features introductory level talks for graduate students. Talks are contributed by both graduate students and faculty and last between 15 and 20 minutes, and a significant portion of the talk should be aimed at students with a first-year graduate level of knowledge. The intended audience is the graduate students, and questions and discussion are encouraged. The series is named in honor of Professor David Hallenbeck. Munchies are provided courtesy of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the David Hallenbeck Memorial Fund.

Meetings: Wednesdays at 1:30-2:30 PM in in Ewing 336.

Organizers: Rayanne Luke and Teddy Mishura, advised by Robert Coulter

Benjamin CivilettiBenjamin CivilettiZoomTitle:Electromagnetic Scattering in Bounded Periodic Media: PDE Theory and Numerical Analysis

Abstract: In 1940, Franz Rellich proved an interesting integral identity for an eigenvalue problem for Laplace’s equation. In this talk, I will discuss some history of Rellich identities and their usefulness in studying PDEs; specifically, how they can be used to prove a-priori estimates of a solution. These estimates can be used to show well-posedness of the problem in the sense of Hadamard, and are useful for numerical analysis. I will conclude the talk with my own contributions to the study of the Helmholtz equation in bounded, periodic media. This mathematical problem has applications to electromagnetic scattering problems for thin-film solar cells. 4/15/2020 5:30:00 PM4/15/2020 6:30:00 PMFalse
