​​Congratulations to Jan Ahmed, Aditya Bajoria, MJ Cicchinelli, Ansh Desei, Steppan Konoplev, and Jonathan Ma who represent​​ed the University of Delaware at the Calculus Olympiads 2024 at George Mason University and won a first place medal in the team competition!
The 2nd Annual Mason Calculus Olympiad event has been held on April 13, 2024 on Fairfax campus of George Mason University. The event was organized and sponsored by the Department of Mathematical S​​ciences and the Center for Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (CMAI). A team of Math faculty developed and judged student performance on several sets of advanced level problems aimed at testing students' analytical and critical thinking ability based on the fundamental knowledge of Calculus.
Participating institutions included 8 DMV area universities (Mason, GWU, University of Delaware, Towson, William an​d Mary, Bowie State, Georgetown and UVA), 8 local high schools (Chantilly, McLean, Woodson, West Springfield, Oakton, TJHSST, Governor’s school and Holton-Arms school) as well as two community colleges (NVCC and Hartford CC).
152 students and 33 teams took part in the individual and team competitions this year. 8 students received individual awards in two categories: one for students currently taking Calculus 2 and below, and the other for more advanced students. A total of 6 teams earned recognition in the team round (2 teams sharing the first place and 4 teams sharing the 3rd place).
The University of Delaware team earned one of the first place medals in the team competition, sharing this award with the team from McLean HS. In addition, two students from University of Delaware earned​​ individual awards in the advanced category: Steppan Konoplev took the absolute 1st place in the individual competition (second year in a row!) and MJ Cicchinelli shared 2nd place award with a student from McLean. Overall, U. Delaware team showed a very impressive performance at this event.
